Into the deep

Walking straight into the water, poised.  Tightening goggles.  Diving in...
This one-of-a-kind sculpture portrays a swimming girl on the water's edge.
It's a surprising sensation.  the change from air to water is so sudden. You feel and hear the splash as you enter the water and the outside world is instantly replaced by the muffled silence of the water. As soon as you are submerged, your body starts to feel lighter as the water gently catches you and lifts you towards the surface
The taste of the air, the feel of the wind on my cheek, the sweet promise of a few hours with nothing to do but be in the moment.

I have often watched all of the lovely swimming ladies: - some 70, some 80 entering the water.  For them the getting in is a quiet affair, like they are very simply and ever so gently slipping into a silent world - but it is in the getting out that their real strength and bravery can be seen.
Faces full of laughter, of rosy cheeks, glowing skin and gleaming wide-open eyes filled with joy and inner pride.
