Details on sculpture mediums:

I work in mixed media which includes: metal, wood, resin and textiles, along with bronze metal and introducing bronze resin.  Anything in mixed media can also be cast in bronze. For more information on mixed media process, click on the “info” tab to discover more.

What is bronze resin?

The process of casting bronze resin involves blending bronze powder with epoxy polyester resin to produce a material which is applied to the interior of a silicone mould. Subsequent applications of this will produce a shell into which an armature (metal frame) can be constructed. It is then rubbed back to reveal the surface and this can then be patinated (coloured) using a variety of chemicals.

Cold cast bronze technology has only been around for 60 years so the longevity of sculptures can only be assessed in this time frame. These works are frost proof but NOT shatter proof. A sculpture cast in bronze resin has a similar look and feel to traditional bronze, with its distinctive burnished finish, and shows amazing detail. It is also significantly more affordable than the traditional method of casting and hand finishing molten metal.

I take the same care over my bronze resin sculptures as I do with all my sculptures. They are meticulously modelled and I monitor the production process very carefully to ensure they meet my exacting standards. I have to say I’m delighted with the results and I’m very pleased to be able to offer my clients a relatively affordable introduction into the world of bronze sculptures.

What is foundry bronze?

This more expensive method involves an ancient process which dates back many thousands of years. It involves producing a hollow wax image of the sculpture which is then coated in a thick ceramic layer which is allowed to dry thoroughly.

The wax is burned away leaving a ceramic shell into which molten bronze is poured. Once cooled, the shell is smashed away to reveal the casting which is then cleaned and patinated by heating the bronze with a blow torch and applying a variety of chemicals. This is then left to cool and wax polished.

Metal sculptures can last many hundreds of years whether indoors or outside in the elements.
